Rationality by Steven Pinker Review: The Trouble with Being Human

Steven Pinker’s Rationality is not, despite the title, simply a handbook on how to think logically. It does explain the tools humans have developed for reasoning more reliably—logic, probability, statistics, Bayesian updating, and causal inference. But its recurring subject is the gap between possessing those tools and actually using them.

In that sense, the book is part primer and part catalogue of failure. Its most interesting question is not merely what rationality means in the abstract, but why a species capable of inventing extraordinarily powerful methods of reasoning so often falls back on intuition, anecdote, tribal loyalty, and whatever explanation feels right first.

Familiar Ground, Clearly Mapped

Rationality overlaps heavily with material familiar to anyone who has spent time reading about statistics, cognitive psychology, or the scientific method. There are few genuinely new ideas here if you are already steeped in these topics. Much of the book will feel like a well-organised refresher: confirmation bias, base-rate neglect, motivated reasoning, regression to the mean, and the many ways anecdotes override data in our minds.

That familiarity is not necessarily a defect. Pinker is very good at presenting these ideas clearly, and the book remains accessible throughout. A light, sometimes playful tone keeps it from becoming dry or academic. It works less as a specialist contribution than as a map of the territory: broad, readable, and organised well enough that a newcomer can see how the different tools fit together.

The disadvantage is that experienced readers may recognise the destination long before Pinker arrives. The examples remain entertaining, but the underlying lessons are often ones the intended rationalist reader has encountered many times before.

Causal Networks and Complicated Causes

The section that genuinely stood out to me was Pinker’s discussion of causal networks. This was an area I had not previously explored in much depth, and it provides a powerful lens for thinking about phenomena where simple explanations fail.

Questions such as the nature-versus-nurture debate make more sense when viewed as interacting causal systems rather than binary choices. Instead of asking which single factor “causes” an outcome, a causal network asks how several variables connect, which relationships are direct, which operate through intermediate steps, and whether an apparent relationship may actually be produced by some third factor.

It is a way of thinking that feels both more honest and more useful when dealing with real-world complexity. It also shows the book at its strongest. Pinker is not merely supplying the name of another bias; he is changing the shape of the question being asked.

When Rationality Meets Technology

Pinker also touches, briefly but pointedly, on two of my longstanding pet peeves: widespread fear of genetically engineered crops and persistent resistance to nuclear power. Both can illustrate how unfamiliarity, vivid disasters, and cultural narratives overpower comparative evidence.

Here, however, the lesson of the book needs to be applied to the examples themselves. “Genetically engineered crops” are not one uniform technology with one set of consequences. The National Academies’ 2016 review found no substantiated evidence that currently commercialised genetically engineered crops present different risks to human health from conventionally bred crops. It also found that agricultural outcomes vary considerably. Some insect-resistant crops have reduced insecticide use and crop losses, while heavy reliance on particular herbicide-resistant systems has contributed to resistant weeds.

The rational conclusion is therefore neither “GM crops are dangerous” nor “GM crops are good.” It is to ask which crop, which engineered trait, which risk, which benefit, and compared with which alternative.

Nuclear power presents a similar problem. It is a firm, low-carbon source of electricity and can form part of the balancing resources needed in systems with large shares of variable wind and solar. But the IPCC’s assessment of low-carbon electricity systems does not reduce the problem to nuclear versus renewables. Reliability can be supported through combinations of firm generation, storage, transmission, demand flexibility, hydropower, geothermal energy, and other resources.

Nuclear power may be extremely valuable in some electricity systems. Its costs, construction times, waste, financing difficulties, and accident risks do not disappear merely because some opposition to it is emotional. As I have argued elsewhere, the energy transition is a system problem. The irrationality lies not in choosing the wrong technological tribe, but in refusing to compare the full trade-offs.

That distinction matters because rationalism can develop its own comforting shortcuts. It is easy to identify emotional thinking in people who disagree with us. It is harder to notice when “following the evidence” has become a flattering story we tell about ourselves.

Who Is the Book For?

Despite dealing with heavy topics, Rationality never feels preachy or inaccessible. Pinker has a talent for explaining technical ideas without condescension, and the book’s humour helps soften what could otherwise become a relentless critique of human thinking. I have not read a great deal of Pinker’s other work, so I cannot say whether this tone is typical for him, but it works well here.

Personally, I have long considered myself something of a rationalist, or at least an aspiring one. I have been a reader of LessWrong for years and an avid follower of Astral Codex Ten, which largely explains my interest in the book. In that sense, Rationality often feels like preaching to the choir.

I suspect its ideal audience is not people already immersed in Bayesian reasoning and cognitive biases, but readers who have not yet seriously questioned how unreliable intuition can be. Even for the more familiar reader, however, the book offers useful consolidation and the occasional genuinely clarifying framework—particularly its discussion of causation.

Readers interested in extending the same problem from individual judgment to institutional failure may also find Inadequate Equilibria a useful companion. Pinker asks why human beings struggle to think well. Eliezer Yudkowsky asks why entire systems can remain stupid even when intelligent people recognise their defects.

Rationality may not radically change how you think, especially if you already know the vocabulary. Its sharper reminder is that believing oneself to be rational is not the same as being rational.

Knowing the names of our biases can even become another bias: a way of locating irrationality primarily in other people. Rationality is most useful when treated as a discipline of repeated self-correction, not as a flattering identity. The moment “rationalist” becomes a description of what we are rather than a standard against which we test ourselves, the exercise has already begun to fail.
