Legion: Skin Deep Review — Identity, Dialogue, and the Shape of a Mind

Image
Brandon Sanderson’s Legion: Skin Deep gives Stephen Leeds a case that fits him almost too neatly. A stolen corpse may contain information embedded in its cells. Stephen, meanwhile, carries knowledge by distributing it among his aspects: hallucinatory specialists with distinct voices, habits, and limitations. The mystery and its protagonist are built around the same unsettling idea. Information never exists entirely in the abstract. It needs a container, and the container shapes how that information can be accessed, interpreted, and used. Like the original Legion , Skin Deep is a compact contemporary thriller rather than one of Sanderson’s exercises in long-form escalation. It offers a new case, a new speculative mechanism, and the familiar pleasure of watching a mind conduct an argument with itself. That contained structure is both the novella’s strength and its most visible limitation. Cover image: Legion: Skin Deep by Brandon Sanderson, published by Subterranea...
