The Wrong Stuff Review: Brilliance, Secrecy, and the Soviet Space Race

I have always been fascinated by the space race of the 1960s: its sheer audacity, the extraordinary concentration of money and talent, and the fact that humans reached the Moon only to leave again after a few brief years.

Most of the version I grew up with was American. Mercury, Gemini and Apollo formed a clear ascending sequence, culminating in Neil Armstrong’s first step onto the lunar surface. John Strausbaugh’s The Wrong Stuff reverses that perspective. It tells the story largely from the Soviet side and concentrates not only on the triumphs, but on the secrecy, institutional rivalry, improvised engineering and political pressure behind them.

That makes the book vivid and frequently astonishing. It also creates its principal weakness. Strausbaugh is so good at exposing the chaos beneath the propaganda that the chaos can begin to look like the whole explanation. The Soviet achievements were polished for public consumption, but they were not imaginary. Propaganda could exaggerate what Sputnik and Gagarin meant. It could not place them in orbit.

Editorial update, July 2026: When this article was first published, no crewed mission had travelled to the Moon since Apollo 17. NASA’s Artemis II mission subsequently completed a crewed lunar flyby from 1 to 10 April 2026, the first in more than half a century. Humans have still not returned to the lunar surface.

The Soviet Story Behind the American One

The familiar Western history of the space race is structured around the eventual American victory. The Soviet achievements become the early setbacks that pushed the United States towards Apollo.

Seen from Moscow, the first decade looked very different. The Soviet Union achieved a remarkable sequence of firsts:

  • the first artificial satellite, Sputnik 1, in 1957;
  • the first human in space, Yuri Gagarin, in 1961;
  • the first woman in space, Valentina Tereshkova, in 1963;
  • the first spacewalk, performed by Alexei Leonov in 1965;
  • and the first soft landing of a spacecraft on the Moon, Luna 9, in 1966.

For contemporary observers, the Soviet lead was not an illusion. The United States repeatedly appeared to be following. Gagarin’s flight helped push President John F. Kennedy towards the lunar-landing commitment precisely because Soviet technological superiority seemed plausible.

Strausbaugh is particularly good at restoring the uncertainty of that moment. We know that Apollo 11 eventually reached the Moon. The people living through Sputnik and Vostok did not. For several years, it seemed entirely possible that the Soviet Union might dominate human spaceflight as it had dominated the opening sequence.

Brilliance Inside a Dysfunctional System

The surprise in The Wrong Stuff is not simply that the Soviet programme was dangerous. Early spaceflight was dangerous everywhere. The more revealing point is how often Soviet engineers were required to solve technical problems created or intensified by their own political and institutional environment.

The Soviet state devoted enormous resources to missiles and space technology. The problem was not simple poverty. It was a system of competing design bureaux, irregular supply chains, secrecy between teams, political interference and deadlines imposed for their propaganda value rather than their engineering logic.

Voskhod 1 is a striking example. Soviet leaders wanted to place three people in orbit before the United States launched its first two-person Gemini mission. The available capsule had originally been designed for one cosmonaut. To fit three inside, the crew flew without pressure suits—a decision many engineers opposed.

The mission succeeded, which is precisely why the story is so unsettling. Success did not prove that the risk had been reasonable. It proved that the crew had survived it.

The failed lunar programme offers the opposite outcome. The giant N-1 rocket was intended to compete with the Saturn V, but all four of its flight tests ended in failure. The second explosion destroyed much of the launch complex only weeks before Apollo 11 landed on the Moon.

Strausbaugh captures the atmosphere of continuous improvisation well: engineers adapting old designs, technicians finding crude solutions to highly advanced problems, and cosmonauts accepting risks that would be difficult to defend in advance.

But improvisation should not be romanticised. Ingenuity becomes heroic when people overcome unavoidable difficulty. It becomes something darker when they are repeatedly required to overcome dysfunction created by their own institutions.

The Gulag Was Not a Metaphor

The political background is embodied most powerfully in Sergei Korolev, the secretive Chief Designer who drove the programmes behind Sputnik, Gagarin, Vostok and Voskhod.

Korolev had been arrested during Stalin’s purges and sent into the Soviet prison system. He endured transport to the Kolyma region and forced labour in its gold mines before being transferred to a sharashka, a prison design bureau in which incarcerated engineers worked for the state.

He was later released and placed in charge of the very missile and space projects that produced some of the Soviet Union’s greatest international triumphs.

This history needs to be stated carefully. Korolev was not imprisoned because one of his rockets failed, and it would be misleading to suggest that every unsuccessful launch sent engineers towards the Gulag. His arrest belonged to the wider machinery of Stalinist terror.

The deeper horror is more revealing. The state nearly destroyed the person it later depended upon to demonstrate its technological superiority.

That contradiction runs through the entire programme. Soviet power could mobilise people and resources on an extraordinary scale. It could also imprison its engineers, conceal fatal accidents, fragment responsibility and make honest reporting dangerous.

Secrecy, Disaster, and the Public Story

The Soviet public was shown victories while failures disappeared behind state secrecy. This created an image of almost uninterrupted progress: Sputnik, Gagarin, Tereshkova and Leonov appearing one after another as proof of the system’s momentum.

The hidden history was far less orderly. Vladimir Komarov died when Soyuz 1’s parachute system failed in 1967. The Soyuz 11 crew died after their capsule depressurised during return in 1971. Cosmonaut trainee Valentin Bondarenko was killed in a ground-test fire in 1961, but his death was not publicly acknowledged until decades later.

The wider missile establishment was capable of even greater catastrophe. In October 1960, an R-16 ballistic missile exploded during launch preparations, killing Marshal Mitrofan Nedelin and more than a hundred other people. It was not a crewed space mission, but it arose from the same secret industrial and political world. The disaster was concealed until the era of glasnost.

Strausbaugh is right to emphasise the role of propaganda. The Soviet programme’s public image was carefully assembled from successes while its failures were erased, denied or left unexplained.

Yet propaganda is most effective when attached to something real. Gagarin genuinely orbited Earth. Leonov genuinely left his spacecraft. Soviet probes genuinely photographed the Moon’s far side, landed on Venus and returned lunar samples.

The achievements were not fake. The image of seamless competence was.

Where Strausbaugh’s Tone Helps—and Hurts

The Wrong Stuff is written with humour, momentum and an eye for absurd detail. Strausbaugh enjoys the contrast between the immaculate public image and the patched machinery behind it. That makes the book accessible even when the people, bureaux, rockets and political reorganisations become complicated.

It is also where the book occasionally overreaches.

The title is an obvious answer to Tom Wolfe’s The Right Stuff, and Strausbaugh repeatedly contrasts comparatively methodical Americans with reckless, fatalistic Soviets. There is truth in the institutional difference, but it can become too neat.

The American programme also accepted enormous risk. The Apollo 1 crew died in a ground-test fire. Apollo 13 narrowly avoided disaster. Engineers and managers operated under intense political pressure to meet Kennedy’s deadline. American rockets grew out of military missile programmes, and the programme depended heavily on German expertise acquired after the Second World War.

The Soviet system was more secretive and politically coercive, but “national character” is not a sufficient engineering explanation. Soviet teams were not reckless because Russians possess some innate attraction to danger. They worked inside institutions that rewarded spectacular firsts, concealed bad news and made refusal politically difficult.

Strausbaugh’s sardonic framing is therefore best read as a corrective, not a complete history. It punctures the propaganda myth but sometimes risks replacing it with another: that Soviet success was mostly luck, improvisation and theatrical deception.

The truth is more impressive and more disturbing. Talented people achieved real breakthroughs while operating inside a system that repeatedly made their work harder and more dangerous than it needed to be.

The Dangerous Business of Rocket Fuel

One unexpected result of reading The Wrong Stuff was that it led me towards John D. Clark’s Ignition!: An Informal History of Liquid Rocket Propellants.

Rocket propellant chemistry often sounds less like conventional engineering than an escalating contest to find the most energetic substance that can still be stored, pumped and survived. Hypergolic propellants ignite on contact, eliminating the need for a separate ignition system but introducing substances that can be toxic, corrosive and extremely difficult to handle safely.

This is one reason rocket history has such a particular drama. The political decisions may be irrational and the institutions dysfunctional, but the physical danger is not metaphorical. The machines operate at temperatures, pressures and energy densities that punish small errors immediately.

Strausbaugh does not write a technical history of propulsion, but he conveys the material fragility well. Rockets that appear clean and monumental from a distance are collections of tanks, valves, pumps, seals and control systems operating at the boundary of failure.

Why the Moon Went Quiet

The book also returned me to the question of why humans stopped landing on the Moon after Apollo 17 in December 1972.

The answer was not primarily that the technology disappeared. Apollo had been created for an exceptional geopolitical purpose: demonstrating American superiority after the early Soviet victories. Once that objective had been achieved, the political coalition supporting its extraordinary budget weakened.

As the National Air and Space Museum’s account of the end of the Apollo era explains, NASA’s budget was already falling before the final lunar missions. Vietnam, domestic priorities and declining public interest made sustained lunar exploration difficult to justify. Later plans focused on the Space Shuttle and space stations rather than repeated expeditions to the lunar surface.

The space race was therefore a misleading model for the future. It made progress look like a natural technological curve when it was actually the result of an extraordinary political emergency.

Once the emergency ended, so did the willingness to spend at the same scale.

From Cold War Mobilisation to Commercial Urgency

The modern resurgence of launch activity can look superficially similar. Companies such as SpaceX and Rocket Lab move quickly, tolerate test failures and cultivate a sense that delay itself is dangerous.

But the institutional context is different. As Eric Berger’s Liftoff shows in its account of early SpaceX, commercial urgency still depends on public research, government facilities, regulation and state customers. The private company has not replaced the state; the relationship between them has changed.

The comparison also exposes an important distinction. A startup may face financial extinction if its rocket fails. Soviet engineers faced an authoritarian system in which professional, personal and political survival could become entangled. Both environments produce pressure, but they are not morally or institutionally equivalent.

What they share is contingency. Successful launch systems can appear inevitable only after they work. Before that, they are fragile collections of people, machinery, money and political support that can disappear after one failure too many.

The People with the Right Stuff

The Wrong Stuff was one of the most memorable nonfiction books I read last year. It makes the Soviet side of the space race immediate, strange and often darkly funny. It is especially effective at stripping away the polished image of effortless technological progress.

It should not be treated as the final word. Its pace and humour sometimes flatten the difference between institutional dysfunction, calculated risk, technical necessity and individual recklessness. Readers seeking a comprehensive technical or organisational history will need to go beyond it.

But as a narrative corrective, it succeeds. The Soviet space programme was neither the smooth expression of a superior political system nor a sequence of lucky propaganda tricks. It was a genuine technological achievement produced by brilliant people inside institutions marked by secrecy, rivalry, coercion and waste.

The most unsettling conclusion is not that the Soviet programme lacked the right stuff.

The people often possessed it in abundance. The wrong stuff was the political and institutional machinery surrounding them—machinery that demanded miracles, concealed the cost and then claimed the achievement as proof of its own wisdom.
